Today, Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss things that are not in the Bible, along with verses often taken out of context. Ray shares that he wanted to know what wasn\u2019t in the Bible as a new Christian. It\u2019s easy to see what is but more complicated to identify what isn\u2019t. Many phrases sound biblical but aren\u2019t. One common phrase is \u201cGod helps those who help themselves.\u201d In reality, Christianity is about relying on God, not self-reliance. People like this phrase because they crave self-discipline, but true faith means trusting in God\u2019s help, not our own efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another phrase is \u201cGod won\u2019t give you more than you can handle.\u201d In truth, God often allows overwhelming situations so we rely on Him. He isn\u2019t looking to harm us but to draw us closer. When we come to the end of ourselves, we find the beginning of Him. Oscar shares a personal experience of realizing his reliance on himself and learning to trust God\u2019s strength. \u201cCleanliness is next to godliness\u201d suggests that outward cleanliness equates to righteousness. But morality alone isn\u2019t enough\u2014we need the gospel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many misquote \u201cMoney is the root of all evil.\u201d The Bible actually says, \u201cThe love of money is the root of all evil.\u201d Money itself isn\u2019t the problem; it\u2019s the trust people place in it. Wealth can be a snare, but true contentment comes from trusting Him, not accumulating wealth. \u201cGod wants me to be happy\u201d is another misconception. The Bible prioritizes joy over happiness. Happiness depends on circumstances, but joy is rooted in Christ. God is more concerned with our holiness than our comfort. Jesus endured suffering, and if our ultimate pursuit is happiness, we will lose our way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cName it and claim it\u201d theology is challenged by the story of the paralytic who was healed because of his friends’ faith, not his own declaration. Similarly, \u201cI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me\u201d is often misapplied. Paul\u2019s message wasn\u2019t that we can accomplish anything we desire but endure all situations through Christ. A verse commonly found on jewelry, spoken between Jacob and Laban, is often misunderstood. It was actually about distrust, not a general blessing. Likewise, \u201cJudge not lest you be judged\u201d is misinterpreted to mean Christians shouldn\u2019t judge at all. However, scripture later says to \u201cjudge rightly.\u201d Finally, \u201cGod causes all things to work together for good\u201d is often quoted without the whole meaning. The rest of the verse explains that God works through our circumstances to make us more like Christ.
