Of the many reasons people give to justify the killing of babies in the womb, a common excuse we hear is related to the child potentially being unwanted or being born into poverty. Another common excuse is that if the baby has a deformity, we should be able to kill him or her. Let me show you why these reasonings are very flawed.
“Believing you should kill deformed people—people who are handicapped—reveals something about your character.”
“Abortion should be legal if the child is unwanted or is about to be born into poverty.”
Some of the happiest kids I know are those born into poverty in big cities. All they’ve got is a basketball or a soccer ball, and they play soccer or basketball all day. They are genuinely happy playing sports with their friends, and they rise to be great soccer players or basketball players.
On the other hand, some of the most miserable brats I know are those born into affluence; born into Beverly Hills. They’re spoiled. They’re brats. And what do you want to do? Kill off those who are born in poverty? Those who are happy and appreciative of life? The problem is that you’re just not thinking very deeply. And because of that thoughtless philosophy, you are advocating the killing of children in the womb.
“Abortion should be legal if the child is deformed.”
I can’t believe you’re thinking like that. A civilized society doesn’t kill deformed people, or people who are handicapped—we make provision for them in life. If someone’s handicapped, we’ll make sure they get a parking space near the supermarket door; we’ll open the door wider for them; we’ll build ramps to make it easier for them to get up places.
Believing you should kill deformed people—people who are handicapped—reveals something about your character. It means that when you meet someone in a wheelchair, or someone who has a withered arm, or someone who’s blind, you think to yourself, “This person should never have been born.” In fact, if you had had your way, you would have killed them in the womb.
