Is President Trump a Christian?

The question of whether President Trump is a Christian is an important one—but it is also a very sensitive question. Any time we judge whether someone is a true believer, we must do so carefully, biblically, and with humility.

For example, was Judas a Christian? Was he a follower of Jesus Christ? In one sense, yes—he followed Jesus for at least three years. He walked with Him, listened to His teachings, and was counted among the twelve.

However, the Bible gives us deeper insight into his true condition. It tells us that he was a thief who stole from the disciples’ money box (John 12:6). Jesus made it clear that Judas’s profession was not genuine, calling him “a devil”:

“Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” (John 6:70)

Judas hid his hypocrisy well. Though he outwardly followed Jesus, he did not inwardly follow His teachings. He was a pretender.

“Is President Trump a Christian? The honest, biblical answer is this: We ultimately do not know. We can listen to his words. We can observe his actions. But we must never forget—only God knows his heart.”

Some pretenders are obvious, and some are not. Some sit among God’s people as tares among the wheat—growing side by side within the church.

When the disciples asked Jesus if they should remove the tares, He said to leave them, because God Himself will do the sorting on Judgment Day:

“Let both grow together until the harvest…” (Matthew 13:29–30)

Jesus then explained the meaning of the harvest:

“The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels…
The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend… and will cast them into the furnace of fire…” (Matthew 13:39–43)

That is why we must be careful about making sweeping judgments about others.

However, there is a necessary balance. Jesus warned about “wolves in sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15). So, while we are not called to judge the heart, we are called to exercise discernment.

And when we consider these evidences of genuine faith, we should be examining ourselves just as much as we are considering others.

Three Biblical Tests:

  1. Only God sees the heart

The Bible tells us that God alone sees the inner thoughts and intentions:

“The Lord does not see as man sees… the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

We cannot see someone’s thoughts, hear their private prayers, or know their inner struggles. We do not know if they are secretly crying out to God in genuine repentance.

  1. Look for the fruit of righteousness

While we cannot see the heart, Jesus said:

“By their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:16)

Scripture speaks specifically of the fruit of righteousness:

“Being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ…” (Philippians 1:11)

Is there a pattern of doing what is right? A love for truth? A growing desire to please God?

That is what the Bible calls the fruit of righteousness.

  1. What comes out of the mouth

Jesus also said:

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)

Our words reveal what is within.

Is there humility?
Is there filthy language?
Are there gracious or hateful words?

So, is President Trump a Christian? The honest, biblical answer is this:

We ultimately do not know. We can listen to his words. We can observe his actions. But we must never forget—only God knows his heart. And one day, everything will be made clear:

“Each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it…” (1 Corinthians 3:13)

That applies to presidents… and to us. And Scripture turns the spotlight back where it belongs:

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)

That is the question that matters most.
