Is the Bible Miraculous or Just Another Book?

The School of Biblical Evangelism

Lessons in confronting common questions and objection to the Bible:

“There are contradictions in the resurrection accounts. Did Christ appear first to the women or to His disciples?”

Both Matthew and Mark list women as the first to see the resurrected Christ. Mark says, “He appeared first to Mary Magdalene” (16:9). But Paul lists Peter (Cephas) as the first one to see Christ after His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:5). Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, then to the other women, and then to Peter. Paul was not giving a complete list, but only the important one for his purpose. Since only men’s testimony was considered legal or official in the first century, it is understandable that the apostle would not list the women as witnesses in his defense of the resurrection.

“God said He would blot out all remembrance of Amalek. The Bible itself disproves this statement by mentioning Amalek to this day.”

In Exodus 17:14, God told Moses to “write this for a memorial in a book.” Moses did that and God preserved the Book for 5,000 years so skeptics would know that God keeps every promise He makes. The phrase “I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven” means that He will blot them out as a nation from the earth. There are no descendants of the Amalekites on the earth. They don’t exist.

Can miracles be explained away?

A new convert was reading his Bible when he called out, “Wow! Praise the Lord!” A liberal minister heard him, and asked him what the noise was about. The young Christian replied with great enthusiasm, “This is incredible. It says here that God performed a miracle of deliverance by opening up the Red Sea for the Jews to march through!” The minister replied, “Owing to tidal patterns around that time of year, the Red Sea was a swamp that was only three inches deep.” Somewhat subdued, the young man continued reading, but soon exclaimed, “Wow! Praise the Lord!” “What’s the matter now?” asked the minister. The Christian replied, “God has just drowned the whole Egyptian army in three inches of water!” Over 3,000 times, the Bible speaks of its inspiration by God. His Word is true, and you can believe every word of it.

Couldn’t this prophesy just “be fulfilled” by occurring naturally?

A fact often overlooked by critics is that only one real case of fulfilled prophecy is needed to establish Scripture’s supernatural origin. Even if most biblical predictions could be explained naturally, even one clear case establishes the rest and confirms the prophetic event. Thus, if the critic is to make the case against prophecy, then all instances must be naturally explainable.

This is the underlying principle behind the many “contradictions” of Holy Scripture (such as how many horses David had, who was the first to arrive at the tomb after the resurrection of Jesus, etc.). God has turned the tables on proud, arrogant, self-righteous man. When he proudly stands outside of the kingdom of God, seeking to justify his sinfulness through evidence that he thinks discredits the Bible, he doesn’t realize that God has simply lowered the door of life, so that only those who are prepared to exercise faith and bow in humility may enter.
