Is Hell Mentioned in the Old Testament?
People try to get rid of the notion of Hell by saying that it’s merely a New Testament concept, and that it has no credibility because it’s not mentioned in the Old Testament. Here are a few verses from the Old Testament confirming the reality of Hell.
“For a fire is kindled in My anger, and shall burn to the lowest hell; it shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.” (Deuteronomy 32:22)
“The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me” (2 Samuel 22:6, KJV)
“It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” (Job 11:8, KJV)
“Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.” (Job 26:6, KJV)
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” (Psalm 9:17)
“For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” (Psalm 16:10, KJV)
“The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.” (Psalm 18:5, KJV)
“Let death seize them; let them go down alive into hell, for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.” (Psalm 55:15)
“For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.” (Psalm 86:13, KJV)
“The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.” (Psalm 116:3, KJV)
“If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.” (Psalm 139:8)
“Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell.” (Proverbs 5:5)
“Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.” (Proverbs 7:27)
“But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of hell.” (Proverbs 9:18)
“Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; so how much more the hearts of the sons of men.” (Proverbs 15:11)
“The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.” (Proverbs 15:24)
“You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell.” (Proverbs 23:14)
“Hell and Destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.” (Proverbs 27:20)
“Are you “warning every man” as Scripture commands? Do you say with Paul, “Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men” (2 Corinthians 5:11)?”
“Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.” (Isaiah 5:14, KJV)
“Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; it stirs up the dead for you, all the chief ones of the earth; it has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.” (Isaiah 14:9)
Is Hell Mentioned in the New Testament?
Those who don’t believe in a literal hell often say that it merely means the grave. But the word “grave” doesn’t fit into these verses, nor are they metaphoric:
“But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.” (Matthew 5:22)
“If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” (Matthew 5:29)
“And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” (Matthew 5:30)
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)
“And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.” (Matthew 18:9)
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15)
“Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:33)
“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched.” (Mark 9:43)
“And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched.” (Mark 9:45)
“And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.” (Mark 9:47)
“But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:5)
Are you “warning every man” as Scripture commands? Do you say with Paul, “Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men” (2 Corinthians 5:11)?
