Witnessing Tips for a Variety of False Beliefs

How do you witness to people who believe in evolution and don’t want to hear about God?

If you are unable to reason with them, there is little else you can do but pray for people who are close-minded. However, if their faith in evolution is strong enough to withstand a challenge—and they are open to considering whether the evidence supports their belief—you could give them the book Evolution: A Fairytale for Grown-ups or How to Know God Exists: Scientific Proof of God. The evidence presented in these books will give them compelling reasons to doubt their faith in theory.

How do you witness to a gnostic—someone who believes that God is really evil, the serpent in Eden was really the Holy Spirit, and the knowledge that Jesus taught is what saves a person?

Don’t address the character of God at this point. Instead, address the sin of this person by taking him through the Ten Commandments. Show him that he is a wicked criminal and that he has added to his sins by saying that God is evil. Lay it on thick and heavy. This is a terrible sin because it goes against the light of our conscience. We inherently know that God is good by nature, and to say that He is evil is odious.

“All you can do is plant the seed of truth and then pray that God makes your words (His truth) come to life in the man’s heart.”

What do you say to people who believe in reincarnation?

Don’t get sidetracked into discussing it. I normally ask what they think they will come back as and what they would like to be in the next life. I may ask what they did to merit coming back in this life as a human being, and who is in charge of dealing out all the new bodies . . . is it God? But I do it in a lighthearted way. Then I say, “If there is a place called Heaven, do you think that you are good enough to go there?” Then I take them through the Law. During that time I often mention that the Bible says “it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

I presented the Law to a Muslim and he agreed God had a moral Law and admitted he would be found guilty. However, he said that in Islam you will be punished “for a while” and then sent to Paradise. I kept asking how his fine is paid in the Muslim faith and he went back to punishment and then release to Paradise. I pointed out from Scripture that Hell is forever, not a temporary place of punishment. How would you have responded to this Muslim?

I would take him to civil court and give an example of a criminal who had raped and murdered a number of young girls. Paint the crime as being extremely heinous, because that’s what sin is in God’s sight. It is obvious that he doesn’t see sin as being very serious, if it necessitates only temporal punishment. We tend to trivialize crimes against God with words like “fibs” and “white” lies, but the Scriptures tell us that “lying lips are an abomination to the LORD” (Proverbs 12:22). Lying is so serious in God’s sight that all liars will have their part in the lake of fire. All you can do is plant the seed of truth and then pray that God makes your words (His truth) come to life in the man’s heart.
