Years ago, while filming in Huntington Beach, I noticed a man in a strange hat standing in the background. He showed up week after week, hardly saying a word. I wasn’t the only one who noticed him. He could often be seen behind me while I was interviewing people, and I began to see regular (and sometimes unkind) comments on YouTube about “the guy with the strange hat.”
Over the coming weeks, we began to talk, and I discovered his name was Yale. He was a gentle soul who loved our ministry and even joked about being a stalker.
In time, I learned that he was a retired aerospace engineer with a background in filming. Months later, he became part of our camera crew—both in the studio and at Huntington Beach.
“We are commanded to preach the light of the glorious gospel to every person (see Mark 16:15). Our spoken words, when made alive by the Holy Spirit, turn the light on in the minds of those whose understanding is darkened.”
I’ve got other members of my outreach team I’d like to honor. One is Dani. Years ago, she contacted me and asked how she could help. I told her we needed people with thick skin to help us find interviews on Saturdays for our YouTube channel. I say “thick skin” because we probably get fifty refusals for every one person willing to come on camera. Many of the most moving interviews you see on our channel are there because Dani brought those people to me.
Frank is another faithful member of the team. He has a great sense of humor and remarkable persistence in finding potential interview opportunities.
Back to Yale. If you’ve ever watched our YouTube videos, you can thank God for him. He fixed my sound problems. He fixed my home-studio recording issues. He even fixed my bike so it could safely carry my dog. He was—and still is—the ultimate fix-it man.
In 2026, I told him I had a problem. Every day I turned on eight lights in our house. When I left mid-morning for the local college, I would turn them all off and then turn them back on when I returned. In the afternoon, I went through the same routine.
In swooped the super fix-it man. Suddenly, I was talking to my lights—telling them to go on and off—and multiple times a day I found myself thanking God for this wonderful man.
We are commanded to preach the light of the glorious gospel to every person (see Mark 16:15). Our spoken words, when made alive by the Holy Spirit, turn the light on in the minds of those whose understanding is darkened. These are not merely our words—the God who is light puts His power behind them.
So don’t hold back. Let your light shine—again and again—so that those who are blind may see.
