The Easiest Way to Share the Gospel Every December

Christmas is a time to be with family, to eat good food, and to give and receive gifts. Some of these gifts we get are practical. Some are not. But that isn’t important. What is important is that we give as an expression of love.

Giving gifts around the time of Christmas is supposed to be reminiscent of God giving the greatest gift of all. Literally half the world’s population stops work to celebrate the giving of this gift, and yet most haven’t a clue what it really means. The Scriptures tell us that the reason for this is that the God of this world has blinded their minds to the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4). So, I’ve written this article in the hope that it will help to show how we can use Christmas to share the gospel with the lost. Here’s how to start a conversation:

“Giving gifts around the time of Christmas is supposed to be reminiscent of God giving the greatest gift of all.”

“What’s the greatest gift you’ve ever received?”

Mine is a used bike that my dad had restored. He gave it to me when I was around ten years old, and the sense of excitement still grips me after all these years.

Then, ask if they’re familiar with the Bible verse “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Most have never heard that God offers eternal life as a gift to dying sinners. Follow that by asking for a definition of the word “gift.” It’s obviously “something that is received,” but bring out the important truth that a gift is only a gift when there is no payment. Here’s the dictionary definition: “a thing given willingly to someone without payment…”

The moment that there is some sort of payment, the gift is no longer a gift. It becomes a purchase. Imagine a father purchasing a new Lamborghini for his son, but as he gives him the keys, his son tries to give his father one dollar. The thought that he could pay for the expensive car is both ignorant and insulting.

Here, now, is where to take this conversation to make the greatest of points. Remind the person of two things you’ve established: the gift of God is eternal life, and a gift cannot be paid for. Then ask, “What do you think you have to do to go to Heaven?”

Most will answer that they need to live a good life, help others, believe in God, and obey the Ten Commandments. Here’s my point. If you can make the person understand that they are trying to pay for the gift of eternal life, you will be doing them the greatest of all favors. The offer of anything in exchange for everlasting life is both ignorant and insulting.

“Scripture tells us that God isn’t our father until we make peace with Him. Jesus told the religious leaders that their father was the devil (John 8:44).”

But it gets even worse for those who are trusting in their own religious or good works to enter Heaven. This is because the analogy of a father giving a new car to a son doesn’t work. Scripture tells us that God isn’t our father until we make peace with Him. Jesus told the religious leaders that their father was the devil (John 8:44). The Bible tells us that rather than our father, God is the Judge of the Earth. And we are not His sons or daughters but rather criminals who have violated His Law. The Scriptures call us “children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:3).

That Dollar of Good Works

So, our dollar of good works isn’t just an ignorant insult to a father. It’s a despicable attempt to bribe the Judge of the Earth. We are offering a sacrifice of what we think are “good” works in the hope that He will pervert justice and dismiss our crimes. Look at what the Bible says about that:

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable and offensive [to the Lord].
How much more [unacceptable and insulting can it be] when he brings it with evil intention? (Proverbs 21:27, Amplified Bible)

So, take advantage of Christmas this year by talking about the definition of the word “gift.” Understanding the meaning of a gift could pave the way for a friend or loved one to trust alone in God’s amazing grace and receive the greatest of all gifts: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
