Answering the Question: “Who Made God?”

High on the list of “gotcha!” questions has to be “Who made God?” While it’s often posed as a statement rather than a question, it carries an erroneous assumption—that God was “made.” Despite this, let’s take a few moments to answer the question, first using Scripture and then using the discoveries of science.

In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God for His name, He replied, “I AM WHO I AM.” The Creator wasn’t saying, “I was,” or, “I will be.” He was saying, “I AM.” In other words, He is ever-present in time. This signifies His self-existence and eternal nature—that He was uncreated.

Then, Psalm 90:2 says:

Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

He is God “from everlasting to everlasting.” In other words, God is not bound by the constraints of time. The Creator has an eternal existence with no beginning and no end.

Let’s now relate the concept of God’s eternality to a similar awe-filled concept: the infinitude of the universe.

“He is God “from everlasting to everlasting.” In other words, God is not bound by the constraints of time. The Creator has an eternal existence with no beginning and no end.”

Most scientists believe that space has no beginning and no end (as the Bible also says of God). One reason for this belief is its evident expansion. They have discovered that the universe is constantly expanding because of galaxies moving away from each other. According to Dr. Jason Lisle in his book Taking Back Astronomy, this has been observed and measured by astronomers, providing evidence that space is indeed stretching out:

Most astronomers today believe that the universe is expanding. This expansion is a very natural result of the physics that Einstein discovered—general relativity.

This is in line with the Scriptures. More than 2,500 years ago, the Bible describes this stretching out of space. It tells us that God is the one to “stretch out the heavens like a curtain” (Psalm 104:2). Isaiah 40:22 also says that God “stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.”

While scientific minds can’t begin to understand that the expanding universe never has an end, this concept is accepted without question by most scientists. This is because the thought that space has an ending isn’t reasonable. If there is an ending, what lies beyond it? So, logic demands its infinitude. That’s how scientists logically deal with the notion of infinitude. They have no alternative. And that’s how believers logically deal with the Creator of space being eternal—with God having neither beginning nor end.

But there is a silver lining in the acceptance of both of these mind-blowing concepts. We are humbled by them. The contemplation of both infinity and eternity leaves us in awe. How much more then should we be humbled by the reality of the Creator of the infinite universe!

After trying to wrap his finite mind around the magnitude of God, the psalmist concedes, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it” (Psalm 139:6). He gives up. That’s not easy for a proud heart to do. But the humble find that the end of reasoning opens a wonderful new door: the beginning of worship.
