Why Even Top Scientists Are Doubting Evolution

The Evidence Study Bible

From the Evidence Study Bible

Notice how awkwardly physicist Freeman J. Dyson of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study tries to explain the design of the universe without God:

As we look out into the universe and identify the many accidents of physics and astronomy that have worked to our benefit, it almost seems as if the universe must in some sense have known that we were coming.

Physicist and Nobel laureate Arno Penzias, in contemplating this amazing design in our universe, came to a similar conclusion:

Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe that was created out of nothing and delicately balanced to provide exactly the conditions required to support life. In the absence of an absurdly improbable accident, the observations of modern science seem to suggest an underlying, one might say, supernatural plan.

Speaking of the “absurdly improbable,” Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould described humans as “a glorious accident” of evolution which required 60 trillion contingent events. With cosmologists estimating the Earth to be 4.55 billion years old, to accomplish those 60 trillion events would require more than 36 necessary events per day, each day for 4.55 billion years—just to get Homo sapiens. And conveniently, each of these 36 daily new events just happened to occur in the right place at the right time in the right sequence. And this doesn’t take into account the astronomical number of “accidents” necessary to form the tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of separate ecosystems.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that this amazing universe cannot be explained as a series of happy coincidental accidents.”

One individual put it this way: The odds would be better of getting hit by lightning at the moment you won the Powerball lottery while dying in the crash of a plane that got struck by a meteor. But then, such things don’t happen every day.

In 1950, in his book The Nature of the Universe, astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle also argued for accidental coincidence to explain the many unique but necessary properties of the universe and of our own planet. But the discoveries of the following thirty years dramatically changed his mind, as described in his book The Intelligent Universe. In 1983 he wrote, “Such properties seem to run through the fabric of the natural world like a thread of happy coincidences. But there are so many odd coincidences essential to life that some explanation seems required to account for them.”

It is easy to understand why many scientists like Hoyle have changed their minds in recent years. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that this amazing universe cannot be explained as a series of happy coincidental accidents, the result of a thinking universe that “knew we were coming.” This is why Frederic B. Burnham, a well-known historian of science, declared, “The scientific community is prepared to consider the idea that God created the universe a more respectable hypothesis today than at any time in the last 100 years.”

Michael Ruse, a preeminent evolutionist, wrote in New Scientist: “An increasing number of scientists, most particularly a growing number of evolutionists…argue that Darwinian evolutionary theory is no genuine scientific theory at all…Many of the critics have the highest intellectual credentials.” (Adapted from How to Know God Exists.)

“It would be very difficult to explain why the universe should have begun in just this way, except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us.” Stephen Hawking

“We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures . . . If the Universe had not been made with the most exacting precision we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created for man to live in.” John O’Keefe, NASA astronomer
