Your Biggest Problem Is Your Sin

Deny the reality of sin, and you will daily be shocked by human behavior. The nicest of people who don’t fear God still lie and steal.

“The nicest of people who don’t fear God still lie and steal.”

In an article entitled, “Why Ethical People Make Unethical Choices,” the author said,

Despite good intentions, organizations set themselves up for ethical catastrophes by creating environments in which people feel forced to make choices they could never have imagined. Former Federal Prosecutor Serina Vash says, “When I first began prosecuting corruption, I expected to walk into rooms and find the vilest people. I was shocked to find ordinarily good people I could well have had coffee with that morning. And they were still good people who’d made terrible choices.1

The sweetest of us has a heart that is both deceitful and desperately wicked:

The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)

Deny that this is true of yourself and you set yourself up to fall. Acknowledge it, and you will identify your most formidable enemy. The greatest enemy of Judas was himself. Had he not given himself to sin, Satan wouldn’t have entered him. Give place to the devil, and as a roaring lion he will devour you.

Sin is an ocean in which we once swam. In it we lived, moved, and had our being. But in Christ we were taken out. He rescued us before we were pulled under by its fearful current. We were once in its grasp, but now the fear of the Lord keeps us out.

“Sin is an ocean in which we once swam. In it we lived, moved, and had our being. But in Christ we were taken out. He rescued us before we were pulled under by its fearful current.”

Had David feared God, when his eyes boggled at bathing Bathsheba, he would have never committed adultery and then committed murder. Had Judas feared God, he wouldn’t have allowed the seed of covetousness into his heart and then let a noose be placed around his neck. Had Samson feared the Lord, he wouldn’t have permitted lust to lead him into sin, and, like Judas, into the tragedy of suicide.

How blessed we are to have the Scriptures teach us about the self-preserving nature of the fear of God. How fortunate we are to be able to read of David, Judas, Samson, and a host of others who didn’t listen to that fear, and determine not to follow in their foolish steps.
