Nirvana or Heaven? How this Buddhist Came to Christ

World Religions in a Nutshell

From Ray Comfort’s book, World Religions in a Nutshell.

Raised in Taiwan, Johnson never questioned the Buddhist beliefs that his father taught him. Then, when he started to learn more about the basis of the religion for himself, he began to realize that truth isn’t found in Buddha but in Christ.

I am a 34-year-old, born-again Christian who loves God and hates sin. As a Chinese growing up in Taiwan, I was led to believe in Buddhism by my father without examining the truth of it for myself. I just blindly went along with what my father and the Chinese society believed. I worshipped the Buddha, the mother god Guanyin, thousand-armed “pooza” gods, and other ugly gods with long ears and pimpled heads. Buddhism was never able to answer for me questions such as the origin and creation of the universe, the purpose of man’s existence, and the purpose of my life.

After being exposed to Christianity at the age of 23, I went to the national central library in Taiwan (the biggest in Taiwan) and found out that Buddha never claimed to be a god, nor did he want to be worshipped as a god. That all came from people’s actions after his death. The name Buddha means “the enlightened one.” However, he died at the age of 80, in 543 B.C., after eating poisoned pork and suffering severe pain. Obviously, to me this alone proved that he is not the all-knowing God of the universe, and that he is not “enlightened” and all-knowing enough to prevent his own painful death.

Today the body of Buddha lies in a grave in Kusinara, at the foot of the Himalaya Mountains. But the body of Jesus has resurrected from the dead, proving Jesus has victory over sin and death and is now able to grant us eternal life if we repent of our sins and trust in Him as Lord and Savior.

The facts of life after death still remain an unsolved mystery in Buddhism. So the logical conclusion is: since Buddha can’t even resurrect his own dead body after death, then how can he resurrect mine and grant me eternal life?

Buddhists hope to enter into the state of Nirvana through meditation and self-denial. The term Nirvana means “the blowing out” of existence, unlike the Christian concept of heaven. A supposed eternal state of the end of human suffering and being blended into the universe. However, common sense tells me that I don’t want to die and be blended into the universe like an ant being trampled by death and blended into mud. I rather choose to extend my life through the free gift of eternal life from God! I’d rather be welcomed into heaven than blended into mud and death. My soul, my conscience, and common sense all scream out at me, telling me to choose life instead of “the blowing out” of existence.

Then about two years ago, after hearing from evangelist Ray Comfort of the true Gospel and the use of God’s moral law in converting the soul (Psalm 19:7; Romans 7:7), I realized that I was a sinner who had transgressed nearly all of the Ten Commandments. My wife and I repented of all of the sins listed in the Ten Commandments, accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, and got truly born again. I realized that the suffering of mankind was a direct result of the sin problem of man. It’s obvious that the Buddhist’s way of meditation isn’t the medication needed for the disease of sin. The medication needed is the Gospel of Jesus Christ! My wife and I now have a strong desire for continued holiness and we use God’s moral law in evangelism. All glory to Jesus and many thanks to Ray Comfort
